Sorting is done entirely by hand. The process removes weeds and imperfections.
Each sheaf is individually handled, sorted in handfuls using a large comb, and then made into bundles.
Our straw bundles measure about 30–35 cm in diameter, weigh approximately 7.5 kg, and contain usable lengths of 160 to 175 cm, depending on the season.
Once ready for use, the bundles are placed on pallets to make handling and loading easier.
For straw marquetry, every step requires extreme precision—worthy of luxury craftsmanship.
Cutting and sorting are handled by the ESAT in Chauffailles, located near Jean-Luc Rodot’s fields.
Each stalk is manually inspected: leaves are removed and only flawless pieces are kept.
If a stalk is damaged, too thin, or crushed, it is discarded.
Only the finest, straightest straws of ideal length and diameter are preserved.
Each strand is individually sorted and grouped into carefully weighed bundles.
This meticulous work ensures a refined, noble, and uniform material—ready to be dyed and transformed by Jean-Luc Rodot into exceptional marquetry.
