We plant and harvest rye at specific times of the year

Our rye straw is sown in early October and harvested between late May and early June, depending on the year’s conditions.

We harvest it once the flower has fallen—just before the grain starts to form.

At that point, the rye is still green. It is cut and spread out on the ground using a machine specially designed for this task.

The straw remains in the field for 10 to 12 days, depending on the whims of the weather. Once it turns pale, it is bundled into sheaves and stood upright to finish drying.

Finally, we bring it under cover and store it, awaiting the next stage: sorting.

We sort our straw to keep only the best stalks

Sorting is done entirely by hand. The process removes weeds and imperfections.

Each sheaf is individually handled, sorted in handfuls using a large comb, and then made into bundles.

Our straw bundles measure about 30–35 cm in diameter, weigh approximately 7.5 kg, and contain usable lengths of 160 to 175 cm, depending on the season.

Once ready for use, the bundles are placed on pallets to make handling and loading easier.

For straw marquetry, every step requires extreme precision—worthy of luxury craftsmanship.

Cutting and sorting are handled by the ESAT in Chauffailles, located near Jean-Luc Rodot’s fields.

Each stalk is manually inspected: leaves are removed and only flawless pieces are kept.

If a stalk is damaged, too thin, or crushed, it is discarded.

Only the finest, straightest straws of ideal length and diameter are preserved.

Each strand is individually sorted and grouped into carefully weighed bundles.

This meticulous work ensures a refined, noble, and uniform material—ready to be dyed and transformed by Jean-Luc Rodot into exceptional marquetry.
